Backup a Mac on HP’s MediaSmart Server/ Windows Home Server
I had the opportunity to buy a very cheap version of the HP MediaSmart Server ($299 at eCost.com refurb 1TB model). Though I could have built my own server with parts, etc., and gone the way of Zmanda to go all geeky. However, I actually went simple. Go figure.
Due to the change in my economy I am selling off a lot of my other machines and equipment and decided to commission a good working backup machine and media server. If I am doing contract work or practicing my [fill in the blank web language] I want to make sure I have the media and backups ready. And I guess that a client would like to know his work in progress is safe from loss.
Though it is touted as a simple home user machine, I can still get geeky with it. Open it, upgrade it… develop with it, within reason. The problem I ran into was “What about backing up the Macs?” (PC guys, take a breath… Mac guys, please stop cheering… it’s embarrassing).
Before buying the machine I did some limited research on IF a Mac is allowed to join the gang… or stand outside looking on as if not being picked for the nerdy kick ball game. Further study revealed all signs point to “yes”. Welcome brother Macs!
So to make sure I don’t lose the reference… and IF someone else out there is reading this… I want to share the great job a few people did by posting their steps regarding backing up a pre-10.5 (SuperDuper) and 10.5+ Mac with Time Machine.
Great job guys!

Good advice – start out the race conservative… dummy!
I have realized this (over and over) but never moved my butt to change my approach to running races. I noticed people passing and during the heavily crowded P’tree Road Race, I found myself edging to the right the farther I ran (by the way… for those who are confused by this, you may be the ones running slower on the left having everyone pass/trip over you… just some unwritten running courtesy).
Read up and APPLY this next time.
(I am definitely writing this for myself)
Home at last… but wanna go back
Arrived back home yesterday around 2:30 pm EDT… early, but what can you say about Delta. They have their act together it seems (I’m sure others would beg to differ).
I am thinking about posting a full recap of the trip with Google Map routing for extra fun… but first must go home.
Loved the trip. Hated coming home. Especially to an Inbox full of stuff. So you end up needing to take a vacation from the time back from your vacation.
More to come…
Saturday (written on Sunday)
Due to the up and down of the Monument Valley, my mobile blogging was not happening. We barely got a room in Page, AZ!
Note to self… when in the desert and you have bars on your cell phone, pull over, stop and call the hotels before they fill up. ESPECIALLY on Labor Day weekend!
So the day went like this:
- Left Flagstaff with new shoes (blew a tire on the earlier pair of boots), new medication for Sniffy, feeling better.
- Don’t ask about the gas can incident.
- Hit Kayenta, AZ then finally 4 Corners.
- Walked in four states, drove in four states… all within 1 minute… yup.
- Headed toward Monument Valley losing the sun due to ominous rain clouds from the west. Not too noticable in the picture below…
By the way… I recommend stopping to watch a thunderstorm in the desert. Very cool!
Grand Canyon South Rim, sniffles and a great day
Gonna keep it short due to the lack of sleep I am giving myself.
Becca (girl friend) has a sore throat and sniffles. Ruben Valle, who was going to meet us for the trip from California, had to back out due to work (luv you Wuben! Sorry you couldn’t make it!). And an incident with a “duct taped” cheap cooler made the day interesting.
Oh, and we saw the South Rim of the Grand Canyon (minor detail). But besides all of the above it was a good day. Lots of pictures (soon to come if tech difficulties would become tech simplicities). Missed the sunset due to my labored gift shop shopping.
Off to the 4 Corners (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado) and Monument Valley early in the morning and then to sleep in Page, Arizona. This is the longest of the driving legs and will be tiring to say the least. A day ago it was 104 F in Phoenix. I am not sure what the altitude of the 4 Corners is, but if it’s as low we are gonna melt.
Convertible is great… and wetter than it should be :)…
